Circle Traps

RESCUE! Spotted Lanternfly Trap

Top Pick

The pre-made bag-style circle trap designed specifically for SLF. Exploits their trunk-climbing behavior. Easy to install, easy to empty, no bird-catch risk.

Why it works

  • Bag-style — no sticky surfaces, no non-target catch risk
  • Designed specifically for SLF — fits standard tree trunk sizes
  • 15-minute install, no tools required
  • Catches hundreds of adults per week during peak season

Watch out for

  • !Sized for 4–10" diameter trunks — large ToH may need two
Tip:Install at chest height. Check every 3–5 days. Empty into soapy water.
$12–15

Available at Amazon (~$12) and Home Depot (~$15)

Bark Spray

Zylam Liquid Systemic Insecticide (Dinotefuran 20%)

For Heavy Infestations

The professional standard for systemic SLF control. Applied to trunk bark, absorbed into the tree, kills feeding adults from within. One quart covers many trees.

Why it works

  • Systemic — kills adults that are feeding, not just ones you see
  • Long residual protection (weeks per application)
  • Works during peak aggregation — July through August
  • One quart application is more cost-effective than repeated contact sprays

Watch out for

  • !Do not use near water or on blooming trees (pollinator risk)
  • !Stronger tool — save for heavy infestations, not casual use
Tip:Mix 1 oz product + 1 oz water per inch of trunk diameter. Paint onto lower 12–18" of trunk bark. Apply within the first 3 weeks of adult emergence for best results.
$45–60 / quart

Safari 20SG (Dinotefuran, Soil Drench)

Soil drench version of dinotefuran. Slower uptake than trunk spray (2–3 weeks) but longer residual and works for large trees where bark application is difficult.

Why it works

  • Works for trees where bark spray is impractical
  • Longer residual than trunk spray

Watch out for

  • !Slower (2–3 weeks to uptake vs. 24–48 hours for trunk spray)
$55–65 / 8 oz

Available from professional pest supply vendors

Egg Scraping

Plastic Putty Knife Set (4-pack)

Simple, effective, cheap. Wide plastic scrapers are firm enough to dislodge egg masses without damaging tree bark. The standard tool for egg-scraping season.

Why it works

  • Gentle on tree bark — no cambium damage
  • Wide blade (3") covers egg masses in one stroke
  • Pack of 4 — share with neighbors at a scraper event
Tip:Keep one in your pocket from November through April. You'll use it more than you expect.
$8–12

Available at Amazon and hardware stores

Isopropyl Alcohol (70%), Quart Bottle

Standard kill medium for scraped egg masses. Egg masses dropped into 70% isopropyl are dead within minutes. One quart handles hundreds of masses.

Why it works

  • Kills eggs reliably and quickly
  • Available everywhere — no special ordering
  • Safe to handle, easy to carry in a small container
Tip:Decant into a small wide-mouth jar (baby food jar works great) for easy field use.
$5–8

Available at Amazon, CVS, Walgreens, Walmart

Tree of Heaven Removal

Garlon 4 Ultra (Triclopyr Ester 61.6%)

Best for ToH Removal

The professional herbicide for Tree of Heaven cut-stump treatment. Apply within 30 minutes of cutting for complete kill. Without stump treatment, ToH resprouts aggressively from roots.

Why it works

  • Most effective ToH herbicide — penetrates fresh cut surface
  • Kills the root system, not just the cut trunk
  • Professional-grade, used by forestry crews

Watch out for

  • !Quicker uptake via ester formulation — must be applied within 30 minutes of cut
  • !More expensive than Roundup but significantly more effective on ToH
Tip:Apply directly to the cut surface (cambium ring) with a foam brush. Do not dilute. The 30-minute window is real — do not cut and then come back the next day.
$65–90 / quart

Available at agricultural supply stores; search online for "Garlon 4 Ultra"

What We Don't Recommend

Broadcast pyrethroid/permethrin sprays: Kill beneficial insects indiscriminately. SLF population rebounds from neighboring properties within days. Not worth the ecological cost.
Essential oil or "natural" SLF repellents: No peer-reviewed efficacy data. Skip it.
Open sticky-paper traps (without chicken wire guard): Catch songbirds and small mammals. Penn State no longer recommends them without a protective guard. Use bag traps instead.
Ultrasonic or electronic pest repellers: No evidence of efficacy against SLF.
